National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). The month’s designation is sponsored by FEMA’s Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps and the Advertising Council, and its purpose is to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and communities.

Churches, which are often seen as the center of community life, should lead the way in preparing for and being equipped to meet the needs of local communities when disaster strikes. Churches can also encourage their members to make family emergency plans, so families will know how to get back together if they are separated during a storm and how to deal with different situations that may occur.

Ready and its Spanish language version Listo ask individuals to do three key things: (1) get an emergency supply kit, (2) make a family emergency plan, and (3) be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses. Encourage members of your congregation to visit www.ready.gov for resources on how to make a family emergency plan, protect businesses and investments, and much more. The NAE also compiled a checklist specifically for hurricane season.
