Support a Coordinated Evangelical Response to the Haiti Disaster
The earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12 has been called the largest natural disaster to hit the Americas in modern times. The tragedy struck a country that was already the poorest in the hemisphere. World attention has been riveted to news reports of indescribable suffering.

Christians are compelled by the love of Christ to respond to such dramatic human need. Beyond the immediate rescue and medical care for the wounded — best left to professionals and those already on the scene — displaced Haitians will need help with food, shelter, water and sanitation. The task of rebuilding Haiti will take years, and many millions of dollars.

The NAE urges evangelicals to give generously and strategically, through our humanitarian arm, World Relief, as well as through denominational relief ministries that are active in Haiti. The NAE is also accepting donations directly for Haitian relief. Funds received by the NAE will be distributed through World Relief and other evangelical member initiatives.

In the weeks and months ahead, the NAE will be monitoring disaster responses and looking for ways in which evangelical church and ministry leaders can develop effective long-term solutions. It is critical that we be good stewards of the Lord’s money, so that it is targeted to the highest priority needs, in a way which bears witness to the love of Christ for all people. In many cases the greatest impact of church-related relief and rehabilitation will come in the months and years ahead, long after the television cameras have departed and the world’s attention has moved on to other issues.
